In new notes to Germany and Great Britain
the Government of the United States sug-
gested an understanding between the two
countries concerning the laying of mines. sub-
marine warfare against merchantmen. the fly-
ing of neutral flags and the exportation of
food-stuffs to Germany.

Upper Alsace
The French were driven from the
heights west of Stossweier, near
Miinster, thus bringing the line from
Barrenkopf to Sattelkopf firmly
under German control.
Eastern Front: Poland, North of the Vistuia

Fighting south of Stanislau assumed serious
proportions.

desperate attacks by the French in
the Champagne district were suc-
cessfully repulsed. ,
Submarine Warfare
German U-Boots sank five English
steamers. . Numerous steamship
companies -discontinued their ser-
vice from and to England. Several
units of troops refused to embark
for France.
Eastern Front: Poland. North of the Vistula
German troops. which had advanced into
the foot-hills near Ossoviez. proceeded to
bombard this stronghold.
After severe fighting lasting several
days the strongly fortified town of
Przasnisz was taken by storm; more
than 10,000 prisoners, 20 field-
pieces, many machine guns and
large quantities of war material
were captured.--Fighting in other
districts north of the Vistula during
the preceding days resulted in the
capture of 5,000 Russians.
Central Poland
Attacking with forces five times greater than
those of the Germans the Russians recap-
tured the outer fort of Mogily. southeast of
Bolimov on the Ravka. '
