The Computing Curriculum

This paper discusses a four-year study that examined student evaluation of the integration of the Lego MindStorms RCX platform across a computing sciences curriculum at a mid-size liberal arts university. The study surveyed 178 students in introductory, intermediate, and advanced computer science courses on their experiences with a variety of Lego MindStorms lab modules. The study design takes into account earlier findings regarding deployment of MindStorms in laboratory projects. A feature of the study is that it examines student perception of the RCX's role as a general computing platform across the curriculum instead of as a robotics platform. The results indicate that students perceive the MindStorms platform as consistently relevant across the study of core computer science. The study also has implications for the integration of robotics within computing curricula.
