OCCUPATIONAL DEGENERACY OF DIMERS WITH NEAREST NEIGHBORS ON SQUARE LATTICES.

The shift operator matrix (SOM) method of McQuistan and Hock continues to be useful in the study of dimers distributed on square lattices. A careful choice of base diagrams and their ordering make it possible to analyze the occupational degeneracy of dimers with given numbers of dimer-dimer and vacancy-vacancy nearest neighbors. The SOM is divided into block matrices, which are constructed recursively in a very straightforward manner. In the process, we discover that two matrix operations, row sum and column sum, are appropriate to the formulation of the problem.
