Detection and occurrence of indicator organisms and pathogens.

ENVIRONMENTAL OCCURENCE AND TRANSPORT 2.1 Surface and ground water The assessment and management of non-point sources of microbial pollution within watersheds is an issue of great concern to the microbial quality of water that may be used as drinking water sources, for aquaculture, or for recreational activities. 2.1.1 Persistence of indicators and pathogens in water and sediments Several papers published in 2004 address how environmental persistence and transport may impact water quality. In the first, 139 water samples from lakes and rivers in southwestern Finland were examined for the enteropathogens Campylobacter spp., Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp., and norovirus; for the bacterial indicators thermotolerant coliforms, E. coli, and Clostridium perfringens and the viral indicator F-RNA bacteriophage; and for turbidity and temperature
