Vegetational analysis of Big Run Bog, a nonglaciated Sphagnum Bog in West Virginia.
The vegetation of a nonglaciated Sphagnum bog in West Virginia was sampled using quadrats, during the summer of 1977. Percent cover was estimated for each moss, herb, and shrub species. A minimum variance cluster analysis of the data distinguished four community types: Sphagnum-Eriophorum virginicum, Sphagnum-shrub, Polytrichum-shrub and Polytrichum-Carex canescens. The vegetation of each community and the spatial pattern of community distribution within the bog is discussed.
