Creating a Stormwater Wetland Best Management Practice-- A Retrofit.

Villanova has recently been awarded an EPA 3 19 Non-point Source Implementation Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to retrofit an existing detention pond creating a stormwater wetland. An overview of the project focus and framework is presented. The objectives of the project are: 1) to provide non-point pollutant treatment to a degraded urban watershed and stream segment through conversion of a stormwater detention basin to an extended detention wetland best management practice (BMP). 2) to create a permanent wetland BMP demonstration site that has substantial research, education, and technology transfer value for the future. a An existing stormwater detention basin on Villanova University property is undergoing conversion into an extended detention wetland. The contributing drainage area is highly urbanized, making non-point treatment of the stormwater desirable. At the present time, initial construction is complete, and the flow through the system is being monitored to tine tune the outflow controls to maintain the original storm water controls and to provide proper hydrologic environment for plant growth and non-plant source pollution control.
