Mixed time-based power spectrum estimators.

This paper presents a new class of power spectrum estimators which is referred to as mixed time-based spectrum estimators (MTBSE). This class differs from the existing type of estimators in the estimation procedure of the autocorrelation function. Instead of employing the same number of samples to provide the autocorrelation estimate at all lags of interest, the MTBSE allows the use of different number of samples to calculate the estimate at different lags. This flexibility introduces new properties to the variance of the spectrum estimate which are not possessed by other estimators. Results show that the MTBSE can be formulated to favor the variance in some frequency bands over others. The width and the location of these bands are determined from the mixture of data samples used in the problem, i.e., the number of samples in relation to the lags to which they are assigned.
