Cleary was a teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing (the Cleary School for the Deaf grew from a series of summer camps she began in 1925), who served as an ambulance driver in the Motor Corps of America during WWI. Her portrait on this pamphlet is of her in her ambulance corps uniform with a collie at her side.
