ARCHBISHOP AND BISHOP ENDORSE IRISH REPUBLIC LOAN
Unqualified endorsement of the Irish Republic Loan is contained in letters
addressed by Most Rev, Edward J. Hanna, Archbishop of San Francisco, and
Right Rev. Mathias C. Lenihan, Bishop of Great Falls, Mont., to the commit-
tees in charge of the loan drive in their respective localities.
Each of these eminent churchmen forwarded a personal subscription to the
loan along with the message of indorsement and encouragement.
Archbishop Hanna, in his letter, addressed to Judge Bernard J. Flood,
chairman of the loan drive for the State of California, says:
“My Dear Judge Flood: The enclosed is my mite in behalf of the Irish fund.
I give,. not, only because I am interested in the Irish fund at home, but espe-
cially because it will’be used to,advance the economic independence of Ireland’s
children—an independence that has been sadly lacking in the years that have
gone. Every true American must wish for the Gael that measure of freedom and
of self-determination which is the desire of the overwhelming majority of Irish-
mien at home, and without which the aspirations of the race will be impossible. *
A blessing upon the-work I heartily send.”
The Archbishop enclosed a check for $1000 with his letter.
Bishop Lenihan, forwarding a check for $200, wrote:
“On different.occasions I have indorsed the purchase of Irish bond certifi-
cates, not as a commercial investment, but in sympathy and as afi earnest to a
most worthy and noble cause—to help the new Irish Republic function, and
thereby bring blessings to the Irish race. .
“T trust that not only the children of Erin, but all 100 per cent. Americans
will show their gratitude towards and their sympathy with the Friends of Irish
Freedom by purchasing at least one of the Irish Bond Certificates,
“History shows that Ireland has always been the truest friend of America.
When the early American colonists were in dire distress and in actual need of
outside assistance, Ireland was the only nation in Europe to send shiploads of
provisions and clothing to those colonists.
“Again, when General Washington and his fighting fellowcitizens were suf-
pangs of hunger, some of the patriotic native Irishmen of Philadel-
phia and “The Sons of St. Patrick,’ of which society General Washington was a
member, donated half a million dollars to alleviate their distress and help them
“Everyone knows the important part that Irishmen and their sons, born on
the free soil of America, took in the war of independence, the civil war and the
Jate world ‘war, for the rights of mankind against tyranny, slavery and des-
., “In order to do away with these three great evils which have prevailed, in
suffering Erin for centuries, every American citizen who loves liberty and hates
iniquity should, in*justice and gratitude to his unselfish friends in Innisfail, give
them é a helping |] hand by purchasing an‘Irish Bond Certificate.”
