Inno case will the poems of which it will consist be such as have
prvioualy appeared in any peoples’ volume. And while there will
Walarge admixture of genuine Irish “Street Ballads,” no speci-
mens of such will be given which are not interesting in themselves
for their intrinsic merit, irrespective of that value which must be
< attached to them as the utterance of the peasant, labourer, or
-méchanic on ‘matters appertaining to their own n condition and that
of their country.
‘The writings of many Irish-Amoricans have been laid under tribute
forthe forthcoming volume ; and the editor has received cordial per-
mission to make suitable selections from the productions of eminent
living writers taeldent in Irelai
d object of the. work may farther be gathered from
the Long extract from the Preface:
“To soothe the resting hours of a labourer, amid the prairies and
vinnie ofthe Western World ; to cheer the roposing soldier amid’
the camp fires of the bivouac; to sing t to ibe listening ears of age
she song of memory and hope; to the songs of love; to
tanhood and womanhood, that of Pvtriotism and duty; to the
child, the strains which he may not forget, and which may win him
fume should he atray, and wia him to Irelond in weal or woe.
‘Thls is a deed which cannot save a nation from martyrdom ; but yet
tt pours the balm of love upon its weary feet, and cheers the hearts
nw who may be capable of serving her with more than words
and songs.”
It is requested that the Agenta of the Jrwsh People will give early
hutimation to the Office of the number of copies of this work which
they think they can dispose of, and would desire to have on sale,
