Several of the Custom House oElcers have recently had instme-
tions from the Collector of the Port to keep a close watch upon
the British In-.il steamers, Africa, Asia, and Arabia, on eve
sn'ival, both night and day.’ It appeals that strong suspicions
were directed toward various persons suspected of defrauding the
revenue by smuggling diamonds and other precious stones, chro-
nomeiers, and various articles of jewelry, which

Aiii with having been made of these facts, the Mag-istaate issued
a eearch warrant for the store of Messrs. Levison 6; Brothers, '

T s o.‘T..esrs at once repaired to the premises, and executed the
process. The apartments were searched, and a seizure was made
of diamond stones, watches, pearls, and other costly foreign arti-
cles ofgewelzy, claimed to be smuggled through during the late
voyages or the above named stearrlships.
The property thus secured is valued at about $90,000. It has
been deposited with Collector Rediield, to await further action in
the matter III! the Government.
Another case of smuggling, similar to the above, was brought to
li ht on Thursday afternoon by Custom House Oilicer Godfrey,
vv en the parties were traced to Jersey City, and a seizure etfected
of s larirs .amount of jewe

other materials of great value. ' The articles are, it is said, worth
altogether about $4,000. These were taken, and on searching for
the steward of the Alps, and two others in his department, who
are accused of being the smugglers, they could not he found, and
are yet missing. The Government authorities also took legal
measures relative to the Alps, and before she sailed on Saturday,
her owners were required to give bonds for her pending the result
of the aifair. , V

Further violations of the revenue laws came to li ht upon the ar-
rival of the Europa at Jersey City, the result of which was the
arrest of the surgeon and the bar-tender of the Europa, and the
seizure of a large amount of

Custom House authorities have been stimulated to greater vigilance
by the late discoveries. In addition to tllat, Mr. Cunard. the agent
and part owner of this line of steamers, came into possession of
information received by the last steamer. that goods had been re-
ceivetl at Liverpool, by stozilsucrs from Glasgow and Grcenoclr, to
be sent to the United States by the Europa. by parties engaged in
smuggling. Mr. Cunard comiiiunicatezl this fact to the proper
person. and measures were taken for the detection of the smug-
glers. For three dzi s past, ollicers of the customs have been se-
cretly watching the arrival of the Europa-havirl lllcir room dur-
ing the time at the Darcy House, close by the ersey City ferry.
Yesterday that steamer arrived at her pier at '9 o'clock. A '
efliccrs were on duty during the day, keeping watch of suspected

at smuggling upon the arrival of the Cambria at that port. Traces
of contmband goods have been discovered, which it is believed will
result in the discovery of a larger amount of them than has lately
been seized. .
