We are here also to pay a tribute of respect
to Abraham Lincoln, the nohle-minded and the
noble-hearted. Our loss of him at this crisis o
our country has revealed to us the great respect
in which all our hearts held him, even though
many did not agree with h‘ ideas. It is a
great tribute to the dqarted chiei magistrate.
that even those who diifered politically from
him do not hesitate to pass the highest
eulogy on his inmgrity and his disinterested-
ness in all that he did for our country,
He was a man arms by the institutions
oi this land, and we all have reason to he
justly proud of him. We can look now on the
practical character oi his genius, so well adapt-
ed to guide a iree people, and also on the gene-
rosity of his soul, which stiderl within him all
seldsh feelings, and prompted him to give all
his time and labors for the benefit of the
country which had chosen him to he its repre-
sentative before the world. And if you hesi-

loss has not unnerved our nation's strength even
for a moment. Yet we were all shocked at the
dlaadini way in which a great and
man has been struck down whilst generously
and successively striving to do away with the
feelings oi distrust excited between the. north-
rn and southern sections ol our country by
(our years of bloody striie. The mntto oi the

think that it came from one who syrnpathlzed
with the system of slavery, of which the least
that can be said is that it is the parent oi
tyranny. We ave come upon times of desola-
tion when the country that has given freedom
to all over whom its sway extends is aiiiicted by
an act whose existence could only he dreamt 01
