Subject: | Appointment of Army field clerks for service during the present
emergency.
1. Appointment of Army ficld clerks to be secured for service Guring the
present emergency will be made without a written exemination, but evidence « ‘
their qualifications for the position must be submitted. Prior to his app a
ment, a test will be made of each applicant as to his ability in shorthand oo ns
typowriting. A candidate to be eligible for appointment must, however , ren
required physical examination, be of good moral character and a citizen of
United States, “gmmy-f401€ olerks: have-a-military status, and as. they are ap-
pointed to office by the Secretary of War, they are officers in tho military
Service, although not commissioned officers. Army field clerks are entitled
to medical attention and supplies at public expense, and while on duty in the
field with troops are fumished quarters end rations, .

correctible to 20/40 by glasses, provided that no organic disease exists in

&, Duties:. Administrative, military correspondence, including letters,
telegrams and indorsements, filing and recording duties. These duties require
the applicant to have a good working knowledge of TYFEWRITING and applicants
who are both STENOGRAPHERS and TYPSTRITSRS will be given preference over others
in appointment. The Salory of Army field clerks is from 1000 to $2000 per annum,
avvointrents usually being made in the lower grades, the larger salary being paid
only to chief clerks. Avmy field clerks are required to purchase their uniform.
5. In addition to taking the oath of office prescribed by Section 1757,
of the Rovised Statutes of the United States, clerks will be required to sub-

4. Application should be made as follows:
