THE PENNY
ILLUSTRATED PAPER
Junz 11, 1887
at Ascot or elsewhere! Proper study
of mankind is, as Prince Bonhomme
well says—Women! In short, birds of
paradise! Look at yonder peacock!
Little would ye imagine to see that
coryphée-smile which distracts atten-
tion from crow’s-feet and wrinkles
buried under Lillie powder and rouge
what mountains of mortification, in-
trigue, and trouble she has sur-
mounted merely to gain admission this
week to the more or less select circle of
the lawn at Ascot. Well may Royalty
laugh in its sleeve at these popinjays of
Vanity Fair! Who’s that slender and
piquante magpie? Who but Becky
Rigolbéche, who danced herself can-
canilly into lustrous company, and
never lacks invitations for the selectest
of country houses? Colours! All the
rainbow hues of the Zoo parrot-house
are here. Red hats and red bonnets,
red sunshades and red skirts abound.
Be your dresses as scarlet, they shall
be as wool, once the fickle favour of
Royalty vouchsafes to sanction them. |
To bein vogue is to be blameless. Walk
up, walk up! and see the wonderful
performances of the golden canary
aping gentility—an old, old comedy,
but ever new!
Ascot State! Enliven the course, by
all means, with the gay Royal pro-
cession up the course. But why tolerate
the Ascot state of ramping and welsh-
ing—why permit the fair fields to be
polluted by the scum of London—the
brutal ‘‘residuum”’ that has too long
prntalised race-meetings over which
the high and mighty Jockey Club is
supposed to be omnipotent? My Lords
and Gentlemen of the Jockey Club, ye
have but to thoroughly cleanse the
Augean stable of the Turf to render
our race meetings what they were of
old—holiday gatherings to which the
respectable Poor and Rich alike could
resort for healthy and pleasant
recreation, © :
Channel racing! Lord Alfred will,
I know, agree with me that it isa
change for the better from the ‘Turf
(as at present) to the sea, the sea, the
open sea. Inthis week of Ascot racing,
we shall not let the Thistle go scot-
free. For, d’ye see,-a clever Scot
designed the Thistle, on the Clyde—
Mr. G. L. Watson, a famous yacht-
architect. Hooray for the Thistle !
Built to compete for the America Cup
with Yankee yachts in this Jubilee
year of grace, the Thistle isn’t likely
to be sat upon our American
brethren. If they try it on, the Thistle
will sting, never fear! She has begun
well by almost beating every clipper
off the East Coast. . Brayvo, Watson !
