years; that in the prime of lifc, from forty to Efty years, there
has been an excess of deaths of scvcuty-four per cent. anion
those who indulged in drink; that the excess between twenty
and thirty years is eleven per cent; between thirty and forty
years, sixty-eight per cent; between fifty and sixty years,
forty-two per cent, and between sixty and seventy years,
nineteen per cent.
These results wcre not attained by a fanatical temperance
enthusiast, but by an investigation conducted wholly ill the

ARDMORE’S GROWTH.
The number of houses which have been built during the
past year or are under way emphasizes the popularity of
Ardmore as a residence section. Not only are houses occu-
pied as soon as they arc linished, but there is a steady de-
mand for homes in this locality which it is almost impossible
to meet. In years gone by this suburb was known almost
wholly as the llolno of those “older residents,” who had set-
tled down in life, and who were content to live without the
conveniences :,d improvements to a living town; but things
have changed in , so that we have here lm ever increasing
population of live L:-stling residents who are thoroughly
alive to the enjoymc. of living in the suburbs and being
able to have the city conveniences.
The desire for Lrcathing space, and the sight. of something
green, has driven the city dwellers in large numbers to seek
homes along the ltlniu Linc, and many of these have selected
Ardlnore as uellrillg the ideal.
In close touch willl Philadelphia through a line railroad
and trolley service, the Ardmorian of to-day combines city
and countrylife iii an ideal way which can be found in few
places. Good water, healthy surrollndings and natural
beauty‘ added to its other advantages, make this a good place
of residence. The student in history and the seeker after
antiquity have here unusual advantages, as almost every loot
of ground in the country round about us has been trod bv the
foot of our patriot forcfathers.
Another ieature worthy of notice is tlle steady increase and
growth of the business life of this suburb, and this is but the
natural consequence of increased population,
No longer is it necessary as in days of old to spend a whole
day in a journey to the city for the things needful in life.
The resident of Ardnlore may now do his buying without -
going far from home. Tile local business men, with charao
teristic progressivcu s, have advanced with the growth of
the place, and instead of the old-time methods, everything
has been modernizcd so that we have here up-to date stores
which are a credit to the town. The growth of Ardruore,
fromabusiuess standpoint, has been steady and healthy.
The business men are known to be reliable and dependable.
These facts will undoubtedly attract nlauy home seekers
in the season which is just opening and we may look for a
still greater increase in our population tllis year.
JUST TRY IT.
Few of us know of anyone who has more trouble than our
own sweet selves. Somehow our cares seem to be magnitied,
the closer we examine them, and the greatest burden that
presses on our heart is the one that we get no sympathy for.
Now there is a formula for the cure of all this, and it: is simv
ply in the helping of some one else.
There are some great, strong, rugged characters in the
world about us, on whom the winds of adversity seem to have
no eliect.
tempest strikes them and bear the trouble without a murmur.
They can live in the shadow as well as in the sunshine, and,
like the fern in the rocky nook of ,the mountain, enjoy life
without the sun.
Not so however with the man who has lived, like the wild
rose, on the sunny side of things. To him sunshine and
prosperity mean life, and the chill winds oi adversity find
him ready to throw up his hand and quit business. Take
his sunshine from him and he loses his nerve, just as the
wild rose shrivels under the breath of the first frosty wind.
Few of this class ever become what we might call hardy
plants, and it is not their fault if they are not proof
against disaster and calamity. Taking it for granted that
you are one of the strong characters-and who among us will
acknowledge weakness?‘-try reaching out a hand to help the
other fellow who is less fortunate, and you will be surprised
at the good you yourself will get out of it. Your own
troubles will not seem so great, and you will be beuefltted
generally. Just try it.
TERI PE RANCE AND LONGEVITY.
It is probable that the best and most. convincing evidence 3
as to the value of telnptrauce in promoting health and length
of life is that furnished by the statistics collected by life in-
snrauce companies, who have a direct interest iu such inves-
tigations as bearing upon the subject of losses by the death
of policy holders.
A paper on this subject recently read before the British
Institute ofAclnarics by Robert Mackenzie Moore, of the D
United Kingdom and General Provident Company, sets forth
with scientihc accuracy the experience of that company, one
oftheoldcst iu the world, Covering the long period of sixty “
years and more than a hundred thousand individual cases,
as to the comparative mortality alnolig policy holders who
either did or did not abstain from the use ofintoxicatiug bev-
erages. Drunltards, it should be understood, do not enter
into the comparison at ull, as they are not eligible to life in-
surance as a rule.
The conclusions of the writer, who spent cighteen months
of exhaustive study of the statistics, aided by 2 corps of
clerks, are of great value to all who desire health and long
life. He finds that the death rate among non-abstainers is
twenty-three per cent. higher than among abstainers, the
contrast holding good at all ages, from twenty to seventy:
They simply hump their shoulders when the m
interests of life insurance. It is unnecessary to makc any
couuucnt upon undisputed facts ascertained in this way.
They apparently remove all doubt that the average duration
of human life is greatly shortened by the habit of indulgence
in intnxicauts.
