No. 65
Protest against the tn-American
attitude of the Journal of the Ameri-
‘can Bar Association has been made
by Daniel~T. O’Connell, in a letter
to Hon. William A. Blount, President
of the Association.
The letter to Mr. Blount, signed by
Mr. O’Connell,.a member of the
American Bar Association and for-
merly Director of the Friends of Irish
Freedom National Bureau of Infor-
mation, is’ as follows:
“October 27,. 1920.
“Hon. William A, Blount, President,
“American Bar. Association,
“Pensacola, Fla.
“Dear Sir:
“The October issue of the Journal
of the American Bar Association
: contains an editorial on page 68, en-
titled “The Situation in Ireland,”
which commits the Association to
the position that Ireland in entitled
only to local self-government.
“There are thousands of> lawyers
of Irish blood, and also of the blood
of other races, who will resent pub-
licly this act of the Board of Editors
who supervise the publication of the
Journal, I[- think the editors should
be told by you, as President, that
they have no right to commit the
Association to such a position,
“My. money as a member of. the
association aids in providing finan-—
cial support-for the Journal; so does
the money contributed as dues by
other members who feel as I do. It
is not right, and it is not just that
our money should be used to insult
us.. There has been altogether too
much of a tendency on the part of
those who exercise an active influence
in the -affairs of the American Bar
Association to reflect the views of
the British’ Bench. and Bar and Brit-
ish policies.
“The Association should be Ameri-
can in all respects. When the
American colonies sought freedom
and independence, there were many
hundreds of the same type now de-
crying the appeal of Ireland, who
then came forward to insist that colo-:
nial form of government was the best _
form of government for the Ameri-
can colonies. Fortunately for you
and me and all other American citi- ~
zens, the colonial form of govern- ~
ment was overthrown and independ-
ence secured.
“T not. only respectfully ask, but
insist that this protest be taken up
by the Executive Committee of the
Association and acted upon definitely.
“Respectfully, ;
(Signed) “Danie, T. O’ConNELL.” :
