The July meeting of the
Board of Directors was held at
St. Joseph's-in-the-Hills, pre-
ceding which the members
were invited to visit the nearby
home of President John J. Sul-
livan.
Dinner was served at the
Retreat House, during which
a huge cake was presented to
the President on the occasion
of his birthday. He was agree-
ably surprised and praised the
men for their zeal and sacri-
fice in behalf of the retreat
movement.
Mr. Sullivan is one of the
small group of pioneers who
sought and found the ‘present
site of St. Joseph’s-in-the-
Hills. His leadership as Presi-
dent for 35 successive years
has inspired and ‘guided the
officers of the Retreat League
to the great heights which we
enjoy today. It is our prayer
.that he may be spared for
many years to continue his
great work for Malvern.

News of Task Ahead
Spurs Additional
Donations For Cause
Rebounding from the first
shock of the terribly high cost
of the construction‘ for the
new buildings at Malvern, the
Planning-Building Commit-
tee, appointed by the Board
of Directors and headed by
Thomas G. Cairns, went into
a huddle with the architects
and other advisers to consid-
er revision. By making a few
changes in the specifications,
together with several substitu-
tions, it has been possible to
save more than $30,000.00,
with no appreciable change in
the finished product, leaving
the approximate cost $286,000.
Assisting the Chairmanin
the laudable endeavor to les-
sen ';he cost are our indefatig-
able Retreat Master, Doctor
Gibbons; James V. Esposito,
an engineer with the Sun Oil
Company; Edward ‘J, Frlel,
specialist in interior construc-
tion and planning; '1‘. Walter
McGrath, Gerald Ronon, Esq,
and Thomas J. Reilly, Esq.
As soon as the revised spe-
cifications were approved by
the committee the contract
was signed and orders given
to proceed as rapidly as pos-
sibie.
Doctor Gibbons, together
with P r e s i d e n t Sullivan,
sought the advice of His Emi-
nence, Cardinal Dougherty,
regarding ‘the specifications
and'monetary restrictions and
received this permission, to-
gether with his blessing, to
proceed immediately.
A rnostgratifying feature in
connection with the building
program is the fact that those
who made pledges are fulfill-
ing them in a constant stream.
Some, upon reading the story
of the unprecedented cost,
have sent in additional sub-
scriptions.
He was Appointed
Governor James H. Duff
announced the appointment,

the Board of Trade and
Chamber of Commerce, and a
