MEN OF MALVE RN Brz'ngz'7zg Foadfor 77zougX2t and 4 Call to .4ctz'072 VOLUME 4 PHILADELPHIA, PA. NUMBER 1 OUR PRESIDENT SAYS: During the season of 1926 all records were broken. More retreats were given than ever before, and the average attendance was higher. Improvements were made to our grounds and build- ings. There is still a large debt to be paid off, but it is hoped that the present year will witness a material reduction in the amount of our pecuniary obligations. Hundreds of our members are now looking forward to a. week- end to be spent at Malvern during the coming season. An annual retreat has become a regularsand an important-part of our lives. Only a few years ago a retreat was, to most of us, an unknown thing. Many of us, when about to go to Malvern for our first retreat, looked forward to the strange experience with misgiving, and some with even a measure of distaste. Now the Retreat League numbers its enthusiastic members by the hundreds. It has scores of faithful workers to whom it can look at any time for active effort and personal sacrifice. As its work is wholly spiritual, and as its membership is composed of none but laymen, it constitutes a standing challenge to modern materialism. Its success cannot be explained away on the theory of emo- tional religion. On the contrary, its appeal is for ordered thinking and quiet introspection. It accomplishes its great results because it is a specific remedy for the ills from which the world is suffering today.
