NEW CARS ON THE P. & W.
Beginning September 15th, the P. & W.
announces that ten new high-speed cars will
be in operation on the Norristown line. The
new cars embody features never before seen
on any railroad in the world. After ex-
haustive tests of correct scale models in the
wind tunnel of the University of Michigan
and guided also by a series of tests by the
Westinghouse Electric Company in its wind
tunnel, cars embodying every practicable
streamline feature have been designed to
travel seventy-eight miles or more an hour.
The new cars will be constructed as far as
possible of aluminum throughout. It is
planned to reduce the running time 33 1-3%.
The running time from 69th Street to Nor-
ristown will be reduced from 24 to 16 min-
utes with a corresponding reduction in the
running time of local trains.
NOTES ON NEW GYM
One fatality has already occurred on the
construction of the new gym. On one of the
very hot days recently, a workman engaged
in digging one of the trenches for drains in
connection with the new gym collapsed at
work shortly after drinking generously of
water. Taken to the Bryn Mawr Hospital,
he died shortly after admittance. —
The Superintendent for the Wark Com-
pany on the new gym is Mr. C. W. Davis who
will be remembered by all who were at Villa-
nova during the construction of Mendel Hall,
as the very efficient superintendent in charge
of construction of Mendel Hall.
The night watchman on the new gym con-
struction job is the same pleasant one-armed
veteran of the Wark Company, Mr. McQuay,
who also saw duty on Mendel Hall.
In excavating for the N. W. corner of the
_hew gym, a ledge of rock was encountered
which entailed considerable blasting.
DAVID GOLDSTEIN AT VILLANOVA
On July 18th David Goldstein, the well
known Catholic author and lecturer, at one
time a prominent Socialist and Jewish labor
leader, gave an open air address to the stud-
ents and faculty of the Villanova Summer
School.
This intrepid Catholic Lay Apostle stopped
at Villanova on his way to Oklahoma where
he is to start his second nation-wide tour to
bring the true story of the Catholic Church
into the highways and byways where preju-
dice and misunderstanding reign.
Mr. Goldstein is traveling in a specially
constructed Buick touring car finished in the
papal colors of yellow and white and bearing
on the side in letters of gold the legend,
“Catholic Truth Guild of Boston.” The car
is equipped with a microphone and demount-
able mast with amplifiers for carrying either
music or the human voice in the open for a
distance of a city block.
Speaking from his car in front of the
grotto to a very attentive audience gathered
in the shade of the trees fronting Alumni
Hall, Mr. Goldstein gave a brief description
of his work and related a few of his experi-
ences in preaching on the highways. In
answer to a question from his audience he
explained some of the reasons which led him
into the Catholic Church. .
Dick O’Shea, ’34, who was an interested
listener put one over on the other boys in
getting Mr. Goldstein to autograph for him a
copy of his latest book.
GENEROUS BENEFACTOR RESTORES
VANDALS’ DAMAGE :
The Owl room and the Villanovan room
are once again resplendent with shiny brass
signs to replace those taken by “vandals”
shortly after the close of school. No burglar-
proof devices were employed to fix the signs
permanently to the doors. It is hoped, how-
ever, that they will remain for several gene-
rations of college students.
