Champagne
In spite of violent attacks north of Souain.
the French were unable to make any prog-
rcss.
Eastern Front, v. Unsingen: The Pripet-
Styr Sector, Volhynia, Eastern Galicia
Russian cavalry was defeated in the marshes
west of the lower Styr. Additional forces
of Teutonic Allies crossed the River. south
of the bend. Count Bothmer captured a
height on the Sereth, northwest of Tamopol.
The Strypa front was held against Russian
attaclzs.
Mediterranean
During the preceding two weeks. subma-
rines of the Central Powers had sunk more
than ten enemy merchantmen.
Serbia
The crossing of the Danube by the allied
annies was completed between Schabatz and
Gradiste. The larger portion of the first
Serbian hill position south of Belgrade. and
the dominating Anatema Mountain. south
of Ram. were stormed.
Kamerun
After bitter fighting. the British captured a
further German position west of Edea.
India
Native troops defeated the British along the
frontier of Afghanistan and forced them to
retreat.

After strong artillery preparation the French
renewed their attacks against the heights east
and southeast of Souchez; they were repulsed
at almost all points.

Eastern Galicia
Strong Russian attacks north of Buczacz were
repulsed: a portion of the enemy's troops
succeeded in advancing across the Strypa.
Serbia
The first range of hills south and southeast
of Belgrade was in the possession of v. Koc-
vesz's army: units of v. Gallw'itz's army.
after the occupation of the Danube island
between the mouths of the Mlava and Mo-
rava rivers, captured town and fortress of
Semendria and drove the Serbians south-
ward.

Upper Alsace
After a violent bombardment. a portion of
the French position on the western slope of
the Schratzmaennle was captured.
Sweden
The Swedish government protested in Lon-
don against the violation of neutrality by an
English submarine. which had shelled and
destroyed a German steamer in Swedish ter-
ritorial waters.
