A violent offensive. against v. Eichhorn's
army at Smorgon failed; the pursuing Ger-
mans reached a point halfway to Oschmiana
(southeast of Vilna).
The Viliia-Nismcn Sector
During the pursuit. the Vilna-Lida railroad
and the Niemen Bend. due southwest of the
mouth of the Molczadz (left tributary of the
Niemen) were reached.
The booty captured in the battle of Vilna
amounted to almost 22.000 prisoners. 3
field-pieces. 72 machine-guns and large quan-
tities of baggage.

vastly superior enemy forces. to repulse large
enemy cavalry forces in the sector south of
Lake Drisvjaty; infantry held the positions
north of Smorgon.
The Viliia-Niomcn Sector
Pressed by V. Eichhorn's army. and their
Hank being rnenaced by repeated drives by
German cavalry. the Russians gradually re-
treated eastward. Von Scholtz and Von
Gallwitz crossed the Lida-Baranowiczi rail-
road and drove the enemy toward the Gavja
sector (right tributary of the Niernen) and
Novo-Grodelc.

The crossing of the Molczadz was forced
and the sector west of the upper Myschanlra
(right tributary of the Szczara) was reached.
