Western Front:
on 10: Armentiire. La-Bane’:
after an artillery fire of the greatest
intensity, fifty English battalions at-
tempted a surprise drive through
the thin German line at Neuve
Chapelle. German reserves succeed-
ed in checking the enemy east of
the village after sanguinary fight-
ing. To the south of the village,
near Givenchy, the English were re-
pulsed with heavy losses.
Champagne
French attacks were completely re-
pulsed east of Souain. Thus ended
the winter campaign in the Cham-
pagne, which had been almost con-
tinuous since February 11. Although
six army corps opposed but two
weak German divisions, the attempt
to break through the German lines,
in order to relieve the pressure on
the Russian front, failed with a loss
of more than 45,000 men. Less than
one-third of this number was sacri-
ficed by the Germans.
England
A number of important strikes among the
workers in English munition factories, dock-
yards and mines seriously embarrassed the
English Government.
An English torpedo-boat destroyer rammed
and sank the German U-I2; a part of the
crew was saved.

Eastern Front: Lithuania
Sejny and Berzniki were captured
during the early morning hours and
two Russian regiments were anni-

the entire Russian Tenth Army re-

meter front to avoid being surround-
ed' Central Poland
During the engagements which continued be-
tween Rava and Nove Miasto, l.600 Rus-
sians were taken prisoners.
Greece
The new Creek Cabinet formed by Gounaris
expressed itself in favor of strict neutrality.
Turkey: Dardanellu
The shelling of the Dardanelles was con-
tinued with the same ineffectual results. In
contravention of Greek neutrality English
troops were landed on the island of Lemnos.
Coast of Asia Minor
Turkish batteries damaged several enemy
ships during the bombardment of Smyrna
which had begun on March 5. A mine-
sweoper struck a mine.
Western Front:
011 M3rCh 11: Belgian Coast
English battleships ineffectually shelled West
Ende.
Armentieres-La-Baue'e
Nightly drives of the English near Neuve
Chapelle failed.

cruiser "Bayano" in the Firth of Clyde. Out
of a crew of 200 about 30 were saved.
