The Germanic offensive against the Rus-
sian invasion of West Galicia began. It
consisted of a flanking attack from the
south upon the Russians marching on
Cracow from the east and west. At the
same time, to safeguard the flank move-
ment, the Russian forces advancing toward
Lososina Valley and ‘New Sandez were
held in check by a division advancing from
the west and south.
The action began when Austro-Hungarian
cavalry. coming up from the south. engaged
the Russian cavalry. drove them back. and ad-

Early in the morning Belgrade was
completely evacuated by the Serbs
and occupied by Austro-Hungarian
troops. The heights south of the
city were also taken.
The Serbs were in retreat along the re-

arrived in Egypt.
On December 3,
German artillery again shelled Ramscappelle
and Pervyse on the left bank of the Yser.
Fighting continued on the north front before
Ypres, on both sides of the canal. French
attacks in Flanders were repeatedly re-
pulsed. An advance by the French in
Upper Alsace. northwest of Altkirch. was
checked with considerable losses.

the Chamber that Italy would for the pres-
ent maintain an armed neutrality; her
future attitude. however. to be governed by
her interests.

The Russians suffered heavy losses in un.
successful attacks east of the Mazurian
Lake region.--German operations before
Lodz and Lowitsch met with further suc-
cess.ATo the south. weak Russian forces
were thrown back upon Petrikau by the
Austro-Hungarians advancing to the east.

The right wing of the flanking north divi-
sion of the Austrians in West Galicia ad-
vanced on Tymbark. The cavalry was
divided as follows: One column swept to
the north toward Bochnia. the other protected
the flank from attacks from the southeast,
where the Russians had held New Sander

On the northern front in Serbia. the Austro-
l-lungarian troops advanced without resist-
ance; but the enemy developed a strong
offensive west and southwest of Arang-
jelovatz.

The Turkish division before Batum ad-
vanced toward Atshara and pressed forward
east of Batum. The forces occupying
Ardanuch marched eastward. and drove the
Russians back on Ardaghan.

joined the Turks, contrary to English ex-
pectations.

The English military board in Egypt flooded
the east coast of the Suez Canal from Port
Said to El Kantara.
On December 4,

an attempt by German troops to cross the
Yser Canal at Pervyse miscarried; but the
French attacks in Flanders were also re-
pulsed. The Germans progressed near La
Bassee and in the Argonne Forest. An
advance by the enemy south of Metz failed.
