The Przemysl garrison. in conjunction with
Austrian reinforcements. attacked the Rus-
sians in retreat to the north and again de-
feated them. Many of the enemy perished
at Sosnica in the collapse of several bridges
over the San. Portions of the enemy held
their ground east and southeast of the for-

Two companies of Japanese infantry occu-
pied Tsi-nan-fu. the terminus of the Shantung
line. on Chinese territory. The Chinese dis-
played no open resistance to this breach of
their neutrality.
On October 13,
German troops entered Lille after
a violent engagement. Lille, at iirst
declared by its officials to be an
open town, was later occupied by
French troops, and since the city
did not surrender after repeated
requests, it was shelled and
stormed. The white flag was

hoisted at midnight. Four thousand
five hundred members of the gar-
rison, who had retreated to the
citadel, were made prisoners with
their commandant, de Pardieu.
Large quantities of ammunition and
grain were taken as booty.
The French emplaced two heavy batteries
close to the Cathedral in Rheims and used
one of the steeples as a signal-station. Under
these conditions every consideration for the
venerable edifice had to be set aside.
Nancy was shelled by German aircraft.
Heavy German artillery went into action
against the French advanced positions in
Alsace. east of Belfort.

While the vanguard of the Belgian army
was arriving at Fumes (Veurne), a large
detachment reached Ostend in retreat, but
left again at noon. German aircraft
dropped bombs on the city. The inhabit-
ants fled to Holland and England. The
population of the surrounding villages was
crowding into Ostend.
German troops encountered the retreating
British at Kwadrecht. The enemy retired to
Zeebriigge.
