On September 13,
the German troops heretofore stationed along
the Marne captured new positions on the
Aisne. north of Rheims. A new battle de-
veloped in which the artillery on both sides
played an important role.
French sources estimated the casualties of
the English Auxiliary Expedition within a
few days at l5.000 dead and wounded.

Three Belgian divisions attempted a sortie
from Antwerp but were driven back by the
Germans.
A Belgian Commission. headed by Minister
Vandervelde. left for London and New York
to lecture on “German atrocities."

The light German cruiser “Hela” was tor-
pedoed and sunk by an enemy submarine.
Of the crew of 172 men, three were missing,
one killed, and the rest saved.

Damaged British torpedo-boats sought safety
in the Italian harbor of Brindisi.

After five days of tremendous efforts on the
Rawaruska-Grodek line. the Austrians forced

the Russian hosts back toward Lemberg and
captured l0.000 prisoners and a number of
guns. The success could not be followed
up, however. as far superior Russian rein-
forcements threatened the northern wing by
endeavoring to drive a wedge between the
Austrian units. In order not to endanger
communications between the various groups
the Austrian forces were withdrawn and re-
concentrated.

Damascus, Beyrout, Aleppo. Haifa and
Jerusalem were turned into great military
camps. The Turks openly demonstrated
their hate for England and their sympathies
for Germany.

the right wing of the German army was ex-
posed to heavy attacks by the allied French
and English forces. An attempt by the
French to break through was successfully re-
pulsed.

stationed in the District of Suwalki, where a
German administration was immediately
