are of any great help to England. At any
rate the Canadians, Portuguese and Hin-
dus, who now are forming the core of the
British army in Egypt have indeed very lit-
tle military value. On the other hand the
Turks who, as it is known, are under Ger-
man leadership, have shown their efficiency
in an unmistakable manner, -even though
they entered the war only a few weeks ago.
Lately it was reported that the Khedive, as
well as the celebrated Turkish Minister of
lVar Enver Pacha, have left for Egypt. It
seems very probable that English suprem-
acy at the Nile and the Suez Canal will
soon have come to an end, and that will be
a bitter pill for Proud Albion. L. V.
VIOLATION OF PROPERTY
RIGHTS OF FOREIGNERS
IN FRANCE
(From Frankfurter Zeilung, December 7, tom)
GOOD illustration of the high-
handed methods of France-with re-
spect to foreign property fallen into her
hands by means of confiscation-is the case
of a branch of the Austrian “Laender-
bank” in Paris. According to reports a
judgment has been pronounced holding
that the regulations concerning the mora-
torium are not applicable to sequestered
foreign concerns. The branch of the
“Laenderbanl<," therefore, was forced to
pay immediately 50% of all outstanding
debts, and the rest as soon as further
means were available. The protection
against too heavy withdrawals which was
granted to the French banks by the mora-
torium regulation is entirely denied this se-
questcred Austrian bank. To the latter are
applying the disadvantages only which are
accruing from the moratorium; thus, the
loans which were made to France and the
credits which were granted to Frenchmen,
cannot at the time be called in because the
debtors can take shelter behind the mora-
torium,-on the other hand, the bank has
to satisfy each of its creditors immediately!
The executor, of course,--by strength of
that decision,-will try to sell as quickly as
possible all possessions (bills of exchange,
stocks, interests, etc.), of the “Laender-
bank," and it is easily imagined what prices
he will be able to realizel This whole
method in reality is nothing but a property
confiscation which is against the rules of
international law.

dra Viarda, the noted actress. This is a
