4 THE FATHERLAND
neath notice. Statistics show that the real simon-pure American
of Revolutionary stock contributes little to the birthrate and ought
to be almost extinct if it were not for the facility with which
family trees are grown in some families. But thanks to an in-
dustry said to be flourishing in New England, the descendants
of the Mayflower and of the Revolutionary heroes are more
numerous than horse chestnuts. VVe have a letter from a direct
descendant of Roger VVilliams-we have his own word for it-
which is characteristic of the Boston school of present-day
Tories. Here it is verbatim:
Sir :-I have received probably in order to teach me the truth
three copies of your FA1'iii:iu.ANo‘. Permit me an American of
eight generations whose ancestors fought in the Revolution of
1776 and who also descends from some of the Mayflower pas-
sengers to protest against the desecration of General VVashing-
ton's picture by your attempt to confuse him with your wicked‘
and cursed cause. VVe whose ancestors made this country don't
propose to let a lot of Germans, who if they don't like us had
better go home and stay there, dictate to us what we are to
think and do. Plymouth Rock 15 slilligoiizg to rule this country
in spite of a lot of 22:12 Gerrriaiir. I lived in Austria three years
and in that time I became convinced that the Teutons were the
most brutal and savage race in Christendom You say you pro-
pose to say what you think, well, sir, I propose to say what I
think and I say curse Germany, curse the Germans, curse your
Kaiser and your cause and I shall say it whenever and wherever
I choose and you had better send in m name to your Kaiser
as one of the Americans to.be tortured w en he comes over here.
God bless the British Empire. and‘ make her victorious over this
stench -in the nostrils of civilization and decency.
. Yours truly,

' . Harvard.)
C[o Prescott Hall, Cambridge, Mass.
After sending Mr. Moriarty (Harvard) the sort of reply he
deserved, he favors us with another letter:
Let me tell you I and thousands of other Americans are read '
to go if the necessity arises to fight for England.and I shal
die happy if I kill two of the Huns first. My cousin, an officer
in the London Scottish, recentl sent five of the brutes to Hell
where they belong for which t ank God. You will find that in
New England your charming paper 15 put where it belongs in
the ash pail. [The punctuation is Mr. Moriarty”s (Harvard).]
It is evident that this patriotic Tory is out of place here.
England needs him. Over there the authorities are suppressing
newspapers for daring to express dissent from the campaign of
lies conducted in the righteous cause of England, arresting men
and women with light hair and German names, and using con-
centration camps, a la Weyler, to exterminate civilians and pris-
That is the proper atmosphere for a man with
the opinions of Moriarty (Harvard), descendant of Roger Wil-
liams-Williams, whom we have always been taught to hold up
as a champion in the cause of religious liberty and liberty of
conscience, who was persecuted in New England for expressing
opinions that did not accord with those of his neighbors.
If the Moriarties are the real Americans, heaven protect the
United Statesl
A CONGRESSMAN WHO IS NOT AFRAID
Representative Joseph Taggart of Kansas Assails
Harper's Weekly
At least one member of Congress has the courage to protest
against the abuse being heaped by Harper’: Weekly upon the
Germans. Representative Taggart on the lioor of the House of
Representatives in a recent speech attacked Harpefs Weekly for
publishing a cartoon that directly insulted the millions of Ger-
man descendants in this country and in Europe. “This is the
Christmas number of the magazine," said Mr. Taggart in the
course of his address, “and I want to call the attention of the
House to the leading caricature that is in the middle of it-an
insult to the 30,000,000 people of German blood in the United
States, the brave people who live in nearly every State in this
Union, who control every doubtful State in national elections,
and who own more than half of the property in the Northern
States. And yet the Christmas greeting to them is a caricature of
a German soldier breaking in the door of a humble cottage with
the butt of his rifle with intent to commit murder. And this is
labeled with an ancient and holy name, ‘Kris Kringle,’ a little
German child's way of saying in German the name of the Christ
child. I want the people of that heroic blood who may take the
trouble to read my remarks to go to the public library in what-
ever town they reside and call for this magazine and look at the
blasphemous and horrible Christmas greeting that it has offered
to one-third of the American people. I want to say that if there
was a crayon artist among the Members of this House, and he
would bring in materials here and proceed to caricature any brave
people or any soldier who is fighting for his country in the snows
of Europe at this time, and hold him and his people, and the
tenderest sentiments of their hearts, up to ridicule and contempt.
I would vote to expel him from this House of Representatives.
This is a neutral nation, and this is a neutral House of Repre-
sentatives. We in the House are requested by the highest au-
thority to keep our mouths shut about this war, and yet the
editor of one of these publications can insult the most industrious
and prosperous part of our people, and not only insult them, but
convince them that he and hundreds of others, on account Of
their manifest partiality in favor of one empire as against 3"‘
other, are in the pay of one of the belligercnts. I XIOPC ‘M3
partiality will not continue until we wake up some morning and
find this nation atiame with anger." '
HARTLEPOOL WELL DEI-"ENDED
THE false charge propagated by the New York AHBIOPWC
Papers that the German cruisers attacked undefended towns
on the British coast, which was one of the reports sent out from
London to gain sympathy for England immediately after the
bombardment of Hartlepool, Whitby and Scarborough, is contra-
dicted by the Associated Press. This account states that the
British patrol ships, Doon and Patrol. were in the harbor of
Hartlepool to protect the town against just such an attack. The
town also was full of soldiers. The first shell, says the “POW
knocked over twelve of them who were serving a coast defense
gun. In another place the report says: “The German cruisers
were not able to remain in their position long, as their broad‘
sides faced the town and offered a good target for the C035‘
batteries. Two of the cruisers were hit by shells and suffered
damage. as was plainly visible from the shore.” Scarborough
was full of coast defense troops and artillery and Whitby was a
military station.
As soon as this fiction was exploded, the London distlmches
brought the news that the Germans had arrested Cardinal Mer-
ci“ 0f AHWCPD. This was contradicted the next day, and ‘hm
the papers were full of the wholesale massacre of Belgian Plies“,
b)’ the Germans, formulated by another “Belgian commission,’
which ma)’ always be relied upon to furnish harrowing 3C“’“‘,‘t5
of atrocities when the Russians or the English and their allies
are losing it lot of men in battle.
BRAVE AMERICAN ACTRESS
MISS FERN ROGERS, the American actress wl10
W35 playing the leading part in the DIUTY Lane
production of “The Sleeping Beauty” in London, I135
been forced to resign because of her strong pro-Gtfma“
sentiments. She declared that the Germans are “the
deamst P501316 in the world.” Moreover, she did!“ be‘
lieve the stories of German atrocities. We h0Pe Miss
Rogers will come back to the United States, and if She
does we will all be on hand to greet her on the openmg
night She deserves nothing less than an ovation.
