FRANCE WAS DECEIVED
The New York Evening Port has received through a member
of the Yale faculty, "from a distinguished French scholar, with
four sons in the army, whose name would be at once recognized
by American specialists," the following comment on the war:
“I cannot longer endure the thought of this frightful carnage.
But alasl England would listen to nothing. The occasion is
too good for her to disembarrass herself of a troublesome rival.
As if it were possible to exterminate 65 millions of the most
energetic men in Europe, those best fitted for growth and most
determined to do everything to attain itl The more they are
degraded, the more they rouse their spirit to raise themselves
again; and the whole affair will constantly have to be begun
over again. And at the moment, we are dispatching to the
Slmlghter the few men that we have, to pursue the British
chimera of the extermination of the German. I have not met
3 Single man of Gallic blood who realizes that it is a chimera.
It is for you, Americans, to make it understood.”
The Germans found a letter in Antwerp addressed to the Bel-
Eian minister of war by the director of the gymnasium at Mecheln,
