THE FATHERLAND '5
l weapon which all civilized nations have agreed to abolish is
used by England. A weapon which is allowed only for the kill-
ing of wild beasts is used against German soldiersl
English industries seem to be too weak, too undeveloped to be
able to manufacture all the war materials which England now
needs in the war that she succeeded in forcing on Europe. The
factories of the United States are called upon to help England in
this slaughter which she intends to carry on three years, if neces-
sary, for the benefit of the rest of civilized mankind. 'We do not
object to this. Let the Bethlehem Steel “forks and all the dif-
ferent branches of the small arms factory make use of this rare

occasion for reaping a golden harvest for their shareholders, if
they can reconcile it with their conscience.
But we think it our duty to protest against England's receiv-
ing assistance from America in her barbarous warfare which is
in gross violation of the law of nations. VVe believe that in this,

concept of neutrality is more than an empty word and who
values his political conscience above the base desire for gain or
profit.
