We. left Bogota bound for Chiquinguira at 7 4.l. and
reached our destination at 1.20 P.il.; on our way the mountains rang ed
close to Hast and at the base of this range many coal mines were observed.
The methods of mining in nearly all cases were very primitive, but it is
evident that in these mountains there is coal aplenty, yet coal is almost
as dear in Bogota as in Wew York City, great numbers of people burning
wood and charcoal instead of coal, which is so plentiful and casily
mined. To east and west of us, as we approached the Lakes De I'ugune
and De Letrado, we observed some extraordinary mountain and cliff for-
mations, great peaks seemed to have been tilted. on°’one side as though
they vere about to topple into the valley below. Reaching Chiquinquira,
@ very ola town with long narrow streets, only a few of which are paved,
high narrow sidewalks and high ceilings, great windows and doors, large
and heavy enough for ordinary Churches, no trolley cars and if there
are autos in the town, none of them were to be seen, numerous.young-
mochachoes were on hand at the stetion shouting the names of various
hotels. We were taken in charge by a young boy in bare feet, who
called out "Hotel Alleman", I said: "Yo quiero Hotel Irlanda, he smiled
pleasantly and repeated "Hotel Alleman, muy bueno", after a walk of a
mile ve were ushered into Eotel slleman, kept by a sturdy German; we
inquired the retes and were informed three pesos per dey, bed and board.
the place looked fairly clean and though for the locality the price was
high, we decided to remain. We were quite hungry; soon almerso was ready
and finding the dining room on the second floor, we entered. Looking
around the room, on one side in a row on the wall were pictures of Yan
Hindenburg, Bismarck ond Maccenson; on the opposite wall was the picture
of the Saviour. Young antonio was most attentive and did not negleet
to keep the Victrola playing while we enjoyed a very good meal, wine
including champagne, was set at our elbow but upon inquiry, we learned
thet the wine, if taken, would be extra. Cafe Con Letche served our
purpose. Lunch over. ve proceeded to search for mounts for our. long
