The very name of Neagh, which is probably a cor- z
ruption of Neasganulcer‘, seems.to allude to an ancient 1 i
belief in this healing ‘property of the waters; and-also a V!
the more ancient name of Lionnmhuine, 2'. e. the Lake of 1
the Sore, bears a similar reference. The fabulous writers
of the early ages assert, that Lough Neagh first burst ‘forth
in the year 65 of the Christian Era, when Lugaid Rhaib-
derg ascended the throne of-‘Ireland, Vatwhich time there
were but three lakes and ten rivers in the whole kingdom.
The petrifying quality‘of the lake is attended with cir--
cumstances of a more interesting nature to the philoso-
pher, and has continued to puzzle our most sagacions
naturalists from the time of Nennius, who wrote of this
fact in the ninth century, tothe present day.
' Traditionastates, that pieces of holly have been com-
pletely transmuted into stone in the space of seven years,
by the waters ‘of’ the -lake, while ‘the experiments of ‘the
philosopher prove that .21 lapse of twenty years was in-
