wasvbut indistinctly seen from the heights of the-Carey
Mountains ; andpassin g Acrevally and Culfei ghtrin Church,
the Abbey of Bona-Margy is seen close to the road, within
.a walled cemetery: this ruin is suliiciently perfectrto
excite interest, and to indicate the style of its architecture,
and the burial ground is preserved with more respect for
the miserable remains of mortality than is to be found in
the cemeteries in the country parts of Ireland in general.
. The mountains of Knocklead and Sliebh-na-aura, which
were seen on the approach to Bally Castle, are objects of
very considerable interest, and the reader will consequently
find them spoken of more fully after his arrival at Bally
Castle, which appears the most appropriate place for the
introduction of any anecdote or "fact ” connected ‘with
them. i
The Abbey of ‘Bona>Margy was founded in the year
1509 by ‘Charles ‘M‘Donnell, for Franciscan Friars of
the third order, and is one of the latest monastic edifices
erected in Ireland. In 1595, iEneas Voighragh, ‘who
was slain by O’Neil, at the battle of GlenshieslE,"wzis
interred here. .And here ‘also rest the ashes of the
famous James M‘Sorley, who defeated ‘the last of the
'M‘Quillans. ' . I
' ‘The chapel measures-‘about one hundred feet in length,
by thirty-fourpin breadth, and is now unroofed. The
eastern end is ornamented by ‘some tolerably exeicuted
bas reliefs, and th'e'eastern“win'dow ‘was ‘of -considerable
dimensions, and highly enriched with sculpture. On
the south side is a tomb, bearing this inscription, in
Roman capitalsz;
Hcrc lycth the bodio of Jon): M‘NAGII'1'EN, first Secretaire to Randal,
first Earl of Antrim, who departed this Mortalitie in the year of
our Lord God 1630.
