30 GI.ENAR1il CASTLE.
not permit this mansion of the noble family which he
represents, to remain in its present unworthy condition;
and he is now about to re-build and alter, until it as-
sume the character of a baronial castle of the 15th century:
these ‘improvements are to be executed from the designs
, of the Messrs. R. and I. Morrison, whose abilities in this
style of architecture are very ‘conspicuous in their re‘-
edification of Kilruddery-house,”7‘ the seat of the Earl of
Meath, in the county of XVick]ow. When -Mr. ‘Mot.
rison’s improvements shall have been completed, the ‘ap.
proach to the castle will be by a lofty barbacan, standing
on the northern extremity of the bridge. Passing through
this, along terrace, overhanging the river, and confined
on the opposite side by atlofty, embattled ‘curtain-wall,
leads through an avenue ‘of ancient lime‘-trees, to the
principal front of the castle; the appearance of which,
from this approach, will be very impressive. Lofty
towers, terminated with cupolastandigilded vanes, will
occupy the angles of the buildings: ‘-the parapets areto
be crowned with gables, decoratedwith carved pinnacles,
and, exhibiting various heraldic ornaments.
The interior of the castle will -co‘rresp'ond,‘in every way,
‘with the elegance and beauty of the improved‘ elera-r
tion. - .'
The hall is a noble apartment, forty-four feet in length
by twenty in breadth, andthirty feet high; in the'- centre
of which stands a handsome hilliardtable. ‘A cross one end
passes a gallery, communicating with the bed-chambers,
and supported by richly ornamented columns, ‘from the
'grotesque ornaments of which springs 21 beautiful grained
ceiling. , v
