- Western Front:
on April 7’ Verdun, Meuse-Moselle
the French suffered extremely
severe losses in their stubborn and
altogether fruitless attacks on the
height at Combres, against the Ger-
man positions between Seuzy and
Lamorville (north of St. Mihiel) and
in the wood at Mort-Mare (south of
Thiaucourt). German troops ad-
vanced in the forest of Ailly and
destroyed French positions.
- Upper Alsace
The French succeeded in occupying the south-
eastern edge of the peak of the Hartmanns-
weilerlcopf.
Eastern Front: Carpathians
Violent hghting on the Carpathian front con-
tinned.
Buhovina
Renewed Russian attacks along the entire
front in Bul-Lavina were repulsed.
Turkey: Aegean Sea
Turkish coast batteries prevented the land-
ing of enemy troops at Enos near the Bul-
garian frontier.
Coast of Asia Minor
Smyrna was again shelled by enemy air-craft
and warships. which did little damage.
- Western Front:
On April 8, Belgium
the Belgians were again driven out of Drie
Grachten which had been entirely destroyed.
Champagne
German troops tool: some machine guns after
capturing several French trenches north of the
wood at Beau-Sejour.

Verdun, Meuse-Moselle
Fighting continued during the night at certain
points between the Meuse and the Moselle:
but German troops withstood all enemy at-
tacks in the WoEvre. against the height of
Combres, north of St. Mihiel. and in the
forest of Le Pretre.
French Lorraine
A French drive upon Bezange-la-Grands.
southwest of Chateau-Salins, was repulsed.
Eastern Front: Carpathian:
Again and again the Russians relentlessly
drove their troopsinto frontal attacks, which
were everywhere repulsed with most sanguin-
ary losses to the enemy.
Egypt
A native Mohammedan at Cairo attempted
to assassinate Hussein Kamel. the Anglo-
Egyptian Sultan, who then moved to Alexan-
na.
German Southwest Africa
A German airman successfully shelled Eng-
lish troops at Swakopmund.
on Apnl 9’ Western Front: Champagne
the Germans evacuated the trenches cap-
tured on the previous day near Beau-Sejour
after their complete destruction by enemy
artillery.

Violent fighting continued in the Woiivre;
the French were repulsed after earlier suc-
cesses between the Orne and the height at
Combres. North of St. Mihiel also the
French advance from the forest of Selouse
was repulsed with heavy losses. French at-
tacks at Ailly, <Apremont and between Mort-
Marc and the forest of Le Pretre failed. A
