At five o'clock in the morning the
English battleship “Goliath,” the
cruiser “Fox,” a cable steamer, and
(east of Bloemfontein). in the Orange Free
State.

three steamers of the German East
Africa Line lying in the harbor.
The Governor explained that the
ships were not in a condition to be
operated and gave leave for one un-
armed pinnace to draw alongside
and verify the statement. The Eng-
lish, however, sent two pinnaces
armed with machine guns, and blew
up the steamers’ engines, causing a
great deal of damage. hen a
third armed pinnace appeared it
was subjected to machine-gun fire
by the Germans. Whereupon the
battleships promptly shelled the un-
fortified city. The pinnaces, carry-
ing otf some of the men of the
steamers as prisoners, succeeded in
withdrawing after suffering some
damage. On board the steamship
“Feldmarschall,” 13 Englishmen,
among whom was a lieutenant,
were captured. The Government
building was utterly ruined by the
bombardment.

A small detachment of Boers was captured
on the border of the District of Ladybrand
Padang (on the south coast of
Sumatra) on the three-masted
schooner “Ayesha,” which was
armed with four machine guns,
after a 19 days’ passage through
the Indian Ocean. The “Ayesha”
was joyfully welcomed by the crews
of the German ships which had
taken refuge there. As she could
legally remain only 24 hours, the
crew was at once abundantly pro-
vided with victuals, clothing, to-
bacco, and beer.
On November 29,

fer and attacked a French torpedo-boat.
II’
A surprise attack, attempted by strong Rus-
sian forces in East Prussia. against the for-
tified bridge-head of Darlcehmen, on the
Angerapp, failed with severe losses. The
survivors-600 men--were captured.
Repeated Russian advances against the
German positions between Lowitsch and
Lodz were repulsed.
