some progress in spite of the superiority of
the hostile forces, was engaged on its extreme
western front by great masses of troops from
the army of Paris under Generals Gallieni

Was bent back to the northeast; but without
being followed by the enemy. The booty
Captured by the Germans in these engage-
ments consisted of fifty field-pieces and four
thousand prisoners.

tagonists."
(While France and Belgium expressly joined
in the Hague Agreement of I399 concern-
ing the use of so-called dum-dum bullets.
England. it is true. did not sign; but did
recognize the Geneva Agreement which guar-
anteed abstention from all avoidable cruelties
in the conduct of war.)

tacked the left wing of the Russian Niemen
army, which. under the commands of General
Rennenkampf and the Grand Duke Nicholas
Nicholaiovich. was about on a line with
Labiau, Gerdauen and Angerburg.

place on a 70 kilometer front between
Komarov and Rawaruska.
