Album of Manuscript Poetry, Mainly Original, 1844-1850.

OM20 1 v. : [120] unnumbered leaves written on both sides in an easily legible hand with manuscript poems in complex or ruled decorative pen-drawn borders. This work is commonplace book of poetry in manuscript with 200 manuscript poems all written in a fine bold hand. Most are original and are signed "G N" with the date and place of writing given. Two are signed with the author's full name "George Nason". The poems are written between 1844-1850 with most between the years 1847-1849. They were mainly written at Cork, Monkstown, and Plymouth. Includes is a poem thanking the "Ladies of America" for helping the starving Irish. Other poems are: on the deaths of Dr. O'Loughlin, Rathkeale and Mrs. Delacow of Mallow; poems on marriage, poems on sea, battles. Many of the poems have a nautical nature and Nason may have had a naval connections. One of the unoriginal poems is titled: "Lines written in Tracton church Yard Augt 22nd 1839". Another poem was composed by state prisoners on board the M.M. F. Swift while docked without light in early evening in the tropical heat, and a poem composed by the surgeon of H.M. 47th regiment on leaving for India with a note to the effect that his wife and newborn infant died on route to join him. P & B Rowan, purchase 2012. Bound in contemporary half-dark blue morocco, green decoratively embossed cloth sides, smooth spine paneled by a single gilt rule and titles "Scraps" in gilt. The album was at a later date presented to "Mary Morgan / From her loving Mother / January 1897".
