“Joe Doyle of Carrigmichael is the fine son of,
poor but intelligent parents who, at great personal
sacrifice, gather enough money to send him to the
U. of Dublin. Here he meets and falls in love with
Esther Hanrahan, the heiress to a large estate bor-
dering his father's farm. ‘When both his parents
die, Joe not only leaves the U. and returns to the
farm, but also, due to the difference in their social
status, resolves to dismiss Esther from his mind.
The lady, however, has other plans, and the re-
mainder of the novel is concerned with the cir-
cuitous route by which the boy and girl reach the
‘happily ever after’ stage. Though most of the
writing is of mediocre quality, there are portions
of the book that are very well done. Descriptions of
typically Irish pastimes, such as hurling matches
and country dances, are highly entertaining. But as
a whole, Hanrahan’s Daughter tends to become
boring and tedious. . . . Recommended, from .1
moral standpoint, to all classes of readers"-Best

"This novel covers the tranquil yet rich life of an
Irish National school teacher from the last years of
Victoria's reign to the establishment of the Irish
Free State, after civil war, in 1924 or thereabouts.
. . . The novel is a very true and charming picture
of Irish life during years of stress and strain; with
all its truth and emotion it avoids the jar of parti-
san passion. If you want to give a stranger a chunk
of Ireland, without an ax to grind, here it is in all
its quiet beauty"-Cath lVorld 163 :379 J1 ’46,
