UZZARD Al'tNOi.D, Jim Baines and
Squint Peasley were bad men.
They were so bat‘ that Arnold
was worth twenty-live hundred dollars.
and Baines and Peasley one thousand
dollars each to any man who should de-
liver them, dead or alive, to the sheriff
oi Sandoval County., They had been
worth this for close to a year now, and
yet they were still at large, free to mur-
der and pillage at their own sweet will.
They appeared at intervals of a week,

quickly and elfeclively and then dis-
appeared as completely as tho the earth
lull swallowed them.
it had been almost a full month and
no one had seen or heard oi’ the Arnold
gang. Sandoval and adjacent counties
began to'breathe easy once more. Then
the Arnold gang swooped down upon
the little town 0! Pasvola, looted the
general store or two thousand dollars
and wantouiy slew the proprietor.
Sandoval County yelled for action.
As usual Sheriff Clem liolcomb with a
posse of loyal and venge!ui.citizens'

the foothills, searching every foot
ground over which a horse could travel:
but so far as they could discover neither
hoot nor human foot had touched either
bank again. As usual it was as tho the
Arnold gang, along with the horses they
rode, had dissolved into the thinnest oi
thin air. .

to further aggravate matters he found
upon arriving at his office an urgent mes-
