Duo. 24, 1881
OUR TRIPLE A CHRISTMAS
V ' NUMBER.
The mat edition of the Christmas Triple Number of the .
- PENNY ILLUSTRATED PAPER
wnslan unprecedentedly large one. Yet the entire issue
was bought up by the Trade on the day of pub-
lication; and fresh editions have since been called for.
This remarkably and exceedingly gratifying popularity
mny'be justly attributed to the charming nature of
the Coloured Supplement, 3 natural rendering of Mrs.
.Seymour Lucas’: painting of “My New Bonnet." The
merits of this picture, and some other features of our
Christmas Number, have elicited the following. among
other,
. , Ol’Da'Ip)u'S OF VTIIE PRESS. . ‘
' Cnxrsrins Nouns or run “ Puss Iu.r:s'rna-rsn
Pans.”-This Christmas Number costs threepcnce instead
of apenny; but the coloured plate Llone is worth hr more
money, and, besides, there are stories by Mr. F. C. Burnnnd,
Mr. Geo. B. Sims. Mrs. LII. Ridrlell, Captain Mayne Reid,
Isnd llliss Annie Thmnss.‘as wrll as “ The Shovrman’s
Christmas Story,” by “Codlin" (Mr. John Latey, jun.),
3 really etfective tale.-lllorniny Advnliser.
“Another reminder of the season is the Christmas number
of the ‘ Psxzrr ILLEITIATZD Puss,’ consisting of two
sheets and a half of stories, sketches. and plea-santrics,
suited to the period, with whole page and smaller woodcuts,
including one from the fertile fancy of Kate Greennwsy,
entitled “My First Love," nudssongbyV'inccntWallace,the
words by Eliza Cook, on " An Fzzglish Christmas Ilome."
Asif this were not enough to entice the public, alarge- '
sized coloured picture is given-a fair and chubby little girl
in her new bonnet, with a sprig of holly in her hand. from
a painting by Marie Cornelissen (llllrs. Seymour Lucas),
which will. no doubt. adorn the walls of many anunery.
All this mass of Christmas reading and pictures is produced
for threepence, which would not he a dear price for the
striking coloured piste Alone.”-Xanconformist.
Tun “ Psssr Intusssann Parzn.”-The conductors of
the Prssr ltncsrnrzn PAP!!! have published a special
Chnstmns triple number tiled with tales. sketches, poems,
and other amusing matter, and copiously illustrated. The
leading tale is “The Ehowmnn's Chrietmu Story," by '
"Cndlin,” with which are tales by Zllrs. Itiddcll, ltlr. F. C.
Burnaud, 1[r.O. I’. Sims, Captain Mayne Reid, Miss Annie
Thomas, and Mr. Howard !’nul.-'Da-'Iy Nun.
“ One of the bcst I have seen is the Pssxr Itwsraarrn,
which glvcs a capital Christmas number for the modest
ruin of threepence, and in‘whlch ‘codlin’ gets a capital
Christmas story out of the marriage of 3 fat women and n
giant,"-“Dagonct" in the mime.

Tm: Christmas of 1881 will not pass by without our
hcing reminded by frigid cynics that-Lila would be
endornble but for its plv.-osurcs. " Estimahle in every
way, however, as the late Sir Coruev.-all Lewis was,
limngius that thoughtful statesmen hardly meant
his row to he accepted as literallyns plcasureless
beings are wont to regard it. ’ By no manner of
means was it intended that a ban should he put on
Santa Claus or Father Christmas withlhis parcel
of toys for the little ones; or that a single item of
the Ilornely, English celebration ‘of Christmas
should be suppressed. 1 read. the nphorisni as being
a. sweeping condemnation of the hollow, wretched
show and flash pretence of “ pleasure" that pass as
counterfeit enjoyment with the shoddy classes. On
the eve of Christmas, a plea may opportuncly
be i put in, particularly after a generally
unprofitable and laborious twclvcmonth, for a
more economical celebration of Y ' “io-such
rational entertainment as will not'be beyond the
means of the humblest host, for, with Friendship as
the Yorkshire Relish of the feast, the most moderate
meal is the most savoury.

The good-hearted fashion of helping the poor and
needy at Christmas time is steadfastly followed by
her Majesty tho Queen. and their Royal Highnesses
the ' Prince and Princess of Wnlcs. Mr. John
Proctor has ‘drawn an Illustration of the
Queen handing gifts from the Christmas Tree
at Oshorno to the school-children of “Whipping-
lmm; and of the Prince nnd Princess of
lVnles, with their daughters, enhancing the
value of the presents of joints and ‘egyonable
fare by their gracious presence at the Smidiingliani
distribution. The generosity mid natural kindlincss
of the Prince likewise flntl scope in many a channel
known only to those whom he has secretly helped nt
a timely moment. It in by such clmritnble acts as
these real observance: of Christmas as much as by
their unfailing geniality and sociability that our
loyal Family hold fast the allcctions of Ellgllzllmcll
and Enqlishwomen.

Is it true that the magniloqucnt Lord Mayor of
London’ has received the following richly deserved
Roland for the Oliver he has atldrcssed to all his
brother Mayors?
‘my Lord,-If the City at London is so desirous of relicv.
ing the lmpecunious landlords of Ireland, why does not
your august Corporation resolve to torcgo the plcusules of
the table for the New Year, and thus save tlm tens of
thousands of pounds squandered yearly on gzluttiny by
Civic Companies! There you would have aChxi>.tums bonus
amply large enough for the Ir sh landlords.
“ And so say all of us!”

VI know Mr. Edmund Yates, one of the best-
hearted of journalists, will be glad to hear of the
handsome Christmas gift of 1320, which Mrs. Mortimer
Collins has, in response to tho frnul: upprnl of the
stalwart “ Atlas,” who bears the World on his broad
shoulders, received this week from an anonymous
donor. Widow of a gifted poet and novelist, whose
works have yielded pleasant recreation to many, and
who would have died riclrwcre not publisbrrs such
sharks, Mrs. Col‘.ins‘wns in sore need before this
welcome Christums-Box crime. Docsn’t it do your
heart good to hear of such open-handed generosity?
It was n Princcly giver such as this an modern poet
must. have had in his mind's eye when he wroiu:-
One such I know, who, firm as rock,
In all good deeds heass put,
But most in etcret, so I lock
Ilia name within my heartl

So has England in the death from pnralysis of one of
our foremost architects, Mr. George Edmund Street,
It‘.A., designer of the magnihcent pile of the new
Law Courts, rapidly uppronching completion. Many
mam will be glad to sea the portrait of Mr. Street

“My new Bonnet” proved the hit I predicted.
Bearing in mind the gigantic circulation of Our
Triple Christmas Number-“out of print" on the
day of publication was the hrst me edition-it is no
exaggeration to say that the rosy face of the chubby
little maiden Mrs. Seymour Lucas painted so naturally
hns brightened every town in‘the'Kingdom. I am
glad to hear the Christmas‘ Number of Tim Hays‘
Iluatrated News went out of printequnlly soon; and
I am sure a yet wider cirr-le'of youthful readers will
rejoice to learn that Captain Mayne Reid is busily
ndnpting; his fascinating romance of “ The Scalp
lluntcrs ” for TIM Boys’ Illiislralm’ Xezrs, wlicrcin
this famous Indian story will be begun with zest on
the 4th of January.
