Lord Mayor, the past Session has been the
history mainly of onexman-the Primc Minister.
As this current Saturday is the data hxcd
for the dispersal‘ ofour legislators, it is ht that
yet a few more words should be suid in praise of
the great ruler whose benignant away it is England’:
honour and good fortune to enjoy. Mr. Gladstone,
his friends and‘ followers were grieved to notice,
seemed to fade rind‘ tlroop in the early part of the
Sesoiou under the are of ungenerous and un-
.,...t ‘ ‘ ,, lomentably ,‘ ‘ ticjsyn with
which. the irreconcilable clique of Irish members
whom Mr. Parnell‘ leads assailed Ministers when it
became absolutely nccessury to preface the Govern-
ment message otpeace to Ireland with a paternal
Coercion Act. But, with the observance of the
judicious custom of quitting the inmlabrious
house in Downing-sh-cot for some rural retreat
in the green suburbs from Saturday to Mon-
day, a marvellous change for the ‘better was
seen in ltlr. Gladstone. It isno exaggeration to say
that in his skilful, vigorous, and good-tempered
piloting of the, Irish Laud‘ Bill through the
Commons (ably aided. though. he was by Mr.
Law, the Attorney-General. for Ireland), Mr.
Gladstone displayed the highest resources of
the stntesman's art in a way, that he hml not
thithertc equalled. Thorough matter of his intricate
and delicate subject, Mr. Glmlstoue seemed to revel
in his task. To watch him was like. looking at a
skilful swordsman, only that it was a pncitic instru
ment which the Premier wielded with an rulmitncss
and a never-tailing rosourco that no Parliament
can have surpassed. He and his colleagues, all
sincere friends of Ireland, now odor the right hands
of brethren to the Sisicr 1516. his for reasonable
Irishman now to disregard the treascnablc and in-
flammatory speeches of self-seeking agitators, and
to seek to create a Happy Ireland with the Act
which received the Royal Assent on Monday last.

Royal Commissioners sit on the rvoolsucl: in
tho Home of Lords at two o'clock. this (Saturday)
Afternoon very much as they are shown in the small
Engraving on another page; and the Lord Chun-
ccllor, the ccutro pear in the scarlet robes and three-
comerod bot, will read the Queen‘: Speech to the
humlfull of .‘I.I’.’s who usually follow the Speaker
to the bar; and so.will.aml the Session whose chief
fruit is the Irish Land Act.

As he is sure to do

that he would be without salary? On the score
only of the labourer being worthy his hire, it is to be
hoped this rumour will prove to have been un-
founded.

The Queen's railwayjoarney from Portsmouth to
Edinburgh last Tuesday night and. Wednesday
morning appears to have been prefaced by more
than the usual precautions to .1 sure safety for the
Royal train, and privacy and repose for her Majesty.
Loyal Scots were not to be kept, however, from
cordially cheering the Queen on the arrival in Edin-
burgh, as if to counteract the damping iniluence of
the rain. With the Duke and Duchess of Edin-
burgh, the Duke of Connaught, Princess Beatrice,
and the Duke of Cambridge to support her Majesty,
the Queen was well surrounded by the Royal
Family at the Edinburgh Review. But one
would have liked to have learnt that the Prince
and Princess of Wales were also in their natural
places on such a national occasion as this--
it only to disprove the allegation that his
Royal Highness is not popular in Edinburgh.
If the Prince is not fortunate enough to find favour
in the eyes of tho unco guid of the Scottish Capital,
Edinburgh must be about the only cityinvrhich
Il.l't.ll. is not generally liked. A grain of com-
pensntion for the Prince, if it be necessary, which
I take leave to strongly doubt: Liverpool is pre-
paring a hearty Loncashire welcome for their Royal
llighncsscs when they steam up the Merseyintho
Osborne to open the new docks next month.

micro is Joseph Arch? He should. join Mr.
Howard, the English farmers’ member, in the recess,
and rouse the agricultural labourers and tenants of
the counties to demand the urgently-needed measure
of Land Reform that ought not to be postponed for
another twclvemonth. The Tories are insidiously
seeking to raise the buried flag of Protection, and
rechristcn it “ Fair Trade,” or “Reciprocity.” They
would actually stomach a tax on foreign corn-and
so raise the price of our loaves l-to store of! the
forthcoiziing changes in the obsolete lows affecting
the holding and transfer of land in England. But
Mr. Gladstone’: cautious reply to Mr. Howard on
Tuesday plainly meant that “Barlris is willjm "..
that the Prime Minister, in other words, is quitg
ready to grapple with the land question in England
if the public mind is prepared for the reforms. Take
the hint, Mr. Arch! Organise public meetings
calling for an English Land Bill; and you will find
the people of the towns and counties amply prepared
for the changes that are impemtively required.

Mr. Ashmc.-.<l Bartlett-since Mr. Gladstone’:
airy and mirth-moving chair of his crude foreign
notions on 'l'uesdny-has made himself known
to the world as the member for Eye. Mr. Ashmend
Bartlett-Coutts being the representative of the most
charitable of Barouesses, it hm been suggested that
both brothers might be satisfied with one and the
some motto for their kept journal, Enyland.'-
