so. ll:1n'ah for the road !
The Turf! Ah, what would our Old

Freeman’: Jourmzl says 2-“Tho fact
that the Holy See could have been pre-
vailed upon to commit itself to such a
declaration [as the condemnation of the
Irish National League's Plan of Cam-
paign] has occasioned intense surprise.
Unionists connected with Ireland are
too well acquainted with the spirit of
the people to delude themselves with
the idea that the condemnation of the
Plan of Campaign will diminish the
force or even arrest the progress of the
national movement. It also disposes
of the false cry that Home Rule meant
Rome Rulc, by which they gained many
votes at the last election. The corre-
spondent has found a unanimous Icel-
ing amongst all members of the Irish
party in London that, looking at
the political aspect of the pronounce-
ment, whilc it would not affect the
cause in Ireland, it would decidedly
improve its prospects in England.
There was an equally unanimous ex-
pression of regret that the Pope should
have come to the aid of a “Govern-
ment ruled by an Orange gang who
have wantonly insulted the priesthood
and perpetrated every outrage against
the Irish people that the most savage
intolerance could suggest.”
