THE JAMESTOWN EXPOSITION
Congratulations are due from this and other lands to
Exposition, which opened last week.
Other States have had their expositions in which the art
and industry of all nations were concentrated and in which] with
the astounding development of our country was demon-|/"
strated to a wondering world; but none of these can com-| tute
pare with Jamestown in historical associations, in power to
touch the imagination and awake the memories of the past.
Those who view the magnificent array of our warships
in its mind’s eye—must recall the three little vessels bearing “
there three hundred years ago. The largest of these was
of one hundred tons, the secoud of forty tons, and the third
a mere pinnace of twenty tons.
Compare these tiny, frail wooden craft with the 16,000. ' can
ton battleships of to-day, with their towering steel walls;
compare the one hundred adventurous colonists who landed
to found the first English-speaking colony with the 84,000,-

this continent is historic ground. Indian wars, Colovial cuni
wars, battles of the Revolution and the War of 1812, to say aa
nothing of the unhappy civil conflict, have put their historic fact
seal upon places withia a short distance of the site of the Ex-|"0le
