Entered In the Post Office at Ardmore as Second Class Matter,
OTHE ‘VOICE oF THE PEOPLE
A special to the Philadelphia Ledger, from Washington,
dated January 23 contained the following: “Benjamin F.
Hevener was confirmed by the Senate to-day as Postmaster
at Ardmore. Protests proved unavailing, and Representative
Wanger ‘stood pat’ on the appointment.”
This short notice conveyed the first intelligence to Ard-
that after weeks of delay, and in the face of the strongest
opposition, Mr. Hevener had been named. The brief dis-
patch from the National Capital explains in a few words the
situation to the letter. It was clearly shown to the members
of the business men’s committee who journeyed to Wash-] pucks
ington, at Mr. Wanger’s invitation, to present their protest
against Mr. Hevener’s appointment, that he (Mr. Wanger)

on Thursday that the Senate had confirmed Mr. Hevener’s
appointment caused no surprise. In this act another flagrant
disregard of the wishes of the people of the community has
been shown. But ashort space of time has elapsed since a
similar deal was thrust upon our neighbors at Haverford.|¢
There, against all established rules, the effrontery of the
bosses went so far as to outstrip all former records, the man
selected for the position not being even a resident of the] cy
place. This act on the part of Messrs. Wauger and Roberts
was strongly resented by the patrons of the office, but, after
futile protest and vain pleadings, the position of Postmaster
at Haverford was handed out to the residentof Ardmore; and,
to still further show their indifference to the Wishes of the
public, the postal laws were a ain set aside ani

(which it was promised would be strictly observed in the
naming of the appointee) was simply a platitude which was
quoted for effect. As proof of this, the people in question
