MILLIONS AVAILABLE FOR NEW YEAR
Expenditures by the railroads in a large measure con-
tribute to the couutry’s prosperity. It must, therefore, says
the Railway World, afford very general satisfaction to note
that the great railroads are preparing to make liberal dis-
bursements for a period of years and are laying financial
plans to meet extraordinary requirements. The three great
railway systems in the northwestern part of the United States
have aloe planued to raise $255,000,000 of fresh capital to
provide for new construction and additional equipment, an-
nouncements having been made that the Great Northern will
issue $50,099,099 of stock, the Northern Pacific $95,000,000
and the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul a round one hun-
dred millions.
The Chicago and Northwestern has been authorized to
issue $100,000,000 of new stock and the New York Central
management has authority to issue $70,0C0,000 of additional
stock, some of which will doubtless be offered to sharcholders| forme
in 1907. Stockholders of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa
Fe, the Seaboard Air Line and of the Norfolk and Western| tiittio
are supplying those companies with $25,cco,coo, $18,c00,-
coo and $14,0c0,cco respectively by subscribing to bonds,
There is no thought of suddenly checking the wonderful im-
provements which for some years have been carried on by the
Baltimore and Ohio and the Pennsylvania Railroads. The
Gouid lines in the West have two years of steady work ahead
of them before the Western Pacific can be completed and the
Gould roads linked into a single ocean-to-ocean system.
-. Not much has been heard recently concerning exten-
sions by the Harriman lines. It is quite apparent, however,
that the portion of the Illinois Central extending from
Chicago to Omaha will be gr catly improved in order better
to fit it for the work of handling the large amount of traffic
- which the Union Pacific will be able. to turn over to a ws
tensions in Washington and Oregon are also under so| i

In addition there is the sonderful demand for equipment]
from all sections, which is sure to keep the car builders-and|
locomotive constructors working to the full capacity of their
shops. Backing up the industrial activity are the unfailing
agricultural resources, the report.on winter wheat being
encouraging both as to acreage and conditions, If there isa

was spent,
PENNSYLVANIA'S NEW PRESIDENT
Au yof 25,000 shareholders and employes in the
various lines of the system are directly interested in the elec-
tion of James McCrea as president of the Pennsylvania Rail-
road. lt was the tragedy of Alexander J, Cassutt’s life that
he did not live to see the completion of the truly magnificent
works which he had planned. It now becomes the hi
duty of his successor to Svish them and, may be, to carry
forward others of like greatness. The Pennsylvania's policy
is wise in many ways, and, among others, in having at hand
aman todo the work, No matter w ost is to be filled,
