side his own assertion, was a black eye. It may
learn him a salutary lesyon—to keep better company
for the future. The offenders not having been long
in this country, were informed by his honor, that
the course they had puraued, the law of this land
attending thercon, he, in consideration of their be’
strangers, held them to bail in their own recogni-
ance, in the sum of $200 each. 1
Newly Invented Pump.—The attention of ‘the
public generally, and of ship owners and ship-
rights particularly, is called to a pump, invented
by Com. Barron, of the U. S. Navy, and comman-
dant of the Navy Yard in this city. It was used
on Monday last, on board of the Volant, at tbe
Rail Road wharf near the Navy Yard, and has been
used heretofore in other places, with eminent suo-
cess. The principle on which it is constructed, is
‘the division of the barrel into compartments, on all
of which the lever operates simultaneously, raising,
at each stroke, a column of water equal in height
to the whole length of the barrel. In this it differs
from the common pump, in which, at each stroke
of tho lever, a column of water is raised, equal in
height only to the distance through which the pis-
ton passes.” Thus, in the common pump, if the
diameter of, the barrel be three inches, and the
length of the piston stroke one foot, a column of
water will be raised at each stroke, one foot long
and three inches in diameter. If the diameter of
Com. Barron’s pump be three inches, and the Jength
ten feet, a column of water will be raised at euch
stroke of the lever, fen feet long and three inehes in
diameter. It is therefore manifest that ifboth pumps
be of the same length and diameter, and have the
same length of lever, and be moved by the same
degree of foree, that of Com. Barron will discharge
in a given time, ten times as much water as the
other, The construction of this pump is simple.
Tn a square box, of any required size, lids, exactly
corresponding to the diameter of the box, are hin-
“ ged to one side, and at distances from each other
equal to the diameter. Each lid is provided with a
yalve, opening upward. All the lids are joined
with each other by achain, which is attached to the
short arm of the lever. On depressing the long
arm of the lever, all the lids are simultaneously
raised, and laid close to the side upon which ‘they
are hinged; and the air or water, unable to escape
downward through the valves, is forced upward
by the pressure of the lids against the side of the
box. The lever being raised for a new stroke, the
lids are again laid horizontally, pressing, in their
descent, upon the water beneath, which is forced
upward through the valves. Thus at every stroke,
the water is raised through the whole length of the
‘box or barrel.
Travelling.—There are four daily lines of stages
. between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, yet is there
s0 much travel between the two places, that the
names of passengers have to be booked from one to
two weeks in advance to secure seats.
i We pereeive n all the New York newspapers
an obituary annunciation of the death of John Lang,
the veteran editor of the New York Gazette. We
know not if we ever felt more sad at the demise of
any man, not connected with us by strong obliga-
tions, The purity of character Mr. Lang sustained
through along and most usefifl life, his urbane and
conciliating deportment, secured the kind regards
of all, and he died leaving not one single foe behind
bin, By industry and economy, joined to principles
of the most scrupulous integrity, he gradnally
amassed a handsome fortune. His illness may be
dated from the great fire of the 16th December,
when his office and buildings were destroyed; ex-
posure on that awful night, and mental anxiety, in-
duced a low nervous fever, which eventually con-
signed him to the grave.
Death of Sumuel A, Talcott,—This distinguish-
ed lawyer, formerly Attorney General of this
died on Saturday, aged 45. Never, probably, id
young man come to the bar, in this or any other
State in the Union, with higher qualifications; and
he very soon assumed a station among thoso deser-
bess of reasoning, and argument, worthy
of one of the proudest intellects of the age,
against which few could sucoesstully contend. *

UFThe Grand Jury of the city of Albany have
found a bill of indictinent against Hamilton, for
murder in the first degree. This is the individual
who somé weeks since stabbed Mr. Duffy, manager
of the Albany theatre, who “has since died of the
wound, Hamilton was also connected with the
same theatre. It will do well enough to kill peo-
ple on the stage, but killiag them in the street, or
in a bar room, is altogether a different affair, and
sometimes productive of very serious consequences.

United States vs. Christy.—This case has been
recently tried in New Orleans, * Mr, Christy) in
the indictment, was charged with being concerned,
directly, in ‘the late unfortunate expedition of Gen.
Mehia to Tampico. Mr. Christy defended himself,
with the assistance of Mr. Lawrence, and the At-
torney General finding the case hopeless, felt it his
duty to dismiss the proceedings.
OF As this is the season for the influx of strangers in
our city, we deem it a duty to call the attention of son-
thern and western merchants, to the immense quantity
of goods of every description which have recently been
imported, aud to suggest the propriety of their remain-
ing to examine and-satisfy themselves of what we know
to be the fuct, viz: that, the costs of transportation con-
sidered, goods can now be purchased in this city on better
terms than in New York.

Fires,—The city of Albany was on Saturday last
visited with four different fires; considerable damage
was the result.
, Something Uncommon.—There was a fall of snow
in Malta on the fourth and fifth of January Jast.
G7 A fire broke out yesterduy afternoon, at the corner
of Vine and Crown streets, in Mr, Stockden's establish-

This is as it should be. Tampering with public
feeling, either from love of imischief or hope of
gain, is an offence that always deserves exemplary
punishment, and more especially in the present ex-
citable state of the public mind, when the main dif-
fieulty is not to rouse, but to keep quiet.» The in-
ducement to this particular furgery was probably a
wish to speculate in the stock of the Nashville banks,
by purchasing it when depressed through reports of
public disturbances and destruction of the buildings |
and property of such banks. » It is hoped that the |
