Arnold beut and pressed his lips to hers, A
look of ineffable joy Overspread the pale and
worn features. Then a gasp.
“ Bury me—there—by them.
God—” .
“* She’s dead!” solemnly uttered Arnold, rising
erect,
Agatha crept tohisside, His strong arm stole
around her waist, Sbe clung to him, tenderly,
peacefully; after all ber trials came rest.
There reinains little to be added,
The rangers were victorious. The two bands
of Cowboys and Skinners were annihilated, their
leaders dead.
Agatha’s return aroused Mathew Brand from
his death-like stupor, and in course ot time he
fully recovered, but ha was a changed man from
that hour, and when the war ended he greeted
Kirke Arnold kindly; nor did he, to the day of
bis death, years afterward, ever have cause to
regret bestowing his fair daughter upon the
young ranger.
Maria’s last wish was respected, and sho wns
laid by the side of her murdered kindred. Her
memory still lives, as the Girt Cownoy Cap-
