contrivance, everything like exposure was avoided.
Captain Marshall obtained credit for a generosity of
conduct which he did not deserve ; Colonel Barratt
got rid of what might have proved an awkward
inquiry, and Mortimer and our hero of further direet
persecution. We say direct—for under the pretext
of duty, every possible annoyance was inflicted ;
but so guarded were those who thus abused their
authority, that it was impossible for their victims to
