8 ARMY AND NAVY WEEKLY.
‘Well, I have had several experiences this morning. I heard from
Archie Bland for one thing.”
‘“That is good.’’ . .
‘Yes. He is at the Naval Academy, and he hints at some surprise
he has in store for me.”’
’ “Tt will be something pleasant, you can rest assured of that.”’
‘No doubt of it. He’s a splendid fellow. If it wasn’t for him I
wouldn’t have this opportunity of entering the Academy.” ;
‘In a way, yes,’? replied Mrs. Faraday, slowly. ‘‘You saved his
life on the island, and again when the schooner struck your boat.”?
‘But he secured me the five thousand dollars salvage money, vol-
untarily giving up his share. But that’s all passed now. I met
Judson Greene this morning.”
Mrs. Faraday held Clifford away at arm’s length and glanced
searchingly at his handsome, intelligent face.
‘Did you quarrel with him, son?” she asked.
Cliff colored, but he replied promptly:
‘I am afraid I did, mother. It didn’t amount to much. He told
me a lie, then threatened me, and I—I choked him a little.”
Clifford was compelled to chuckle at the recollection.
‘This was not on the-public street ?””
~ “Not very public.”
‘What if you had been arrested?”
‘*A policeman appeared, late as usual.?
‘““My son, you must learn to restrain your temper,’’ cautioned
Mrs. Faraday. ‘Think of the disgrace of arrest. And——’’.
“Gorry! I never thought of that,” exclaimed Cliff suddenly.
““It was a deuced narrow escape. If I had been arrested and fined
or imprisoned it would have killed my chances of ever entering the
Naval Academy. Gorry!” =
‘Ruin your chances?”
“Yes. They are very strict about the moral character of the ca-
dets. You can be perfect, physically and mentally, but if you hav
the slightest stain on your character, it settles you.’? -
‘‘Very proper too.”? =

“It will not happen, my son. Rest content
ambition. When is the competitive examination to take place ?”’
“Next Saturday. It is to be held at the high school. The exami-
ners are Professor Porter,
a-principal.from one of the public schools
and Rev. Dr. Floyd.” P P Pp )
