was on Thursday se’n11ight the scene of a livel
im-eting, which aiforded proof that Mr. Charles
Coborn, one of the most artistic: of comic singers,
was but a prophet when he warned applauding
listeners to his wonderfully popular ballad of
“ Two Lovely Black Eyes ” of the possible con-
sequences of indulging in politics in public.
l’rophet aml the realisation of his prediction are
both delineated in the front Illustration, the
moral of which is undeniably that in these
poleinieal times temperate and moderate language
should be used by all in discussing the Irish
Question.
1 ‘K o -I
On the evening in question, Mr. H. Arnold
I<‘or.s:ter, under the auspices of the South Kin-
sington Woinen‘s Liberal Association, amidst
1)e1‘si>leiit interruption, attempte to give a
lecture upon “ England's Counter-claiin against
lrelaml"-Ali‘. Pitt Lewis, M.l’., being in the
chair The Ladies‘ Liberal Association, which was
rosponsililc for the meeting, is, it seems, divided
“Lion; and, while the Unionists
and their ll‘lL'll(lS occupied the platform, the Home
liule ladies, adorned with green rosettes, formed
a little cotcrie in the right-hand Comer of the
hall. It was evident from the outset that
:1 storm was imminent. “'hile the front rows
and seats were tilled with Unionists and ladies,
the latter in considerable numbers, the back part
of the hall was crammed with Home Rulers.
Mr. Caine had been announced to take the chair,
and the appearance of Mr. Pitt Lewis, M.l’.,
with the explanation that “urgent private
biisiness” had called away the member for
Bairouuiii-l:‘urness, brought forth angry shouts
of “ Where’s Gains?” and clerisive laughter.
The chairman, having implored the audience to
give the lecturer a patient hearing, made way
for Mr. Arnold Forster, but it was some minutes
before his voice could be heard, owing to the
viohnt groans and hisses from the back of the
hall which his appearance elicited. It is not too
much to say that during the whole hour
that the lecture lasted not a single SL'l1i(‘.l)l‘C
was listened to in silence. livery imaginable
insult was hurled at his head; cries of “Sit
down! ” “(lo awn I” “VVill you shut up?"

every minute. Mrs. Ashton llilke, standing
with uplifted arms on the reporters’ table in a
lihb ulesperate ellort to obtain silence, was taken
to be moving a counter-resoliiLion, and the
cheers and shouting redoubled in eiilmgzy. The
next minute the platform was violently storim-zl,
chairs and sticks were use as weapons, the
heavy brass railings were torn off, an a free
flglit lasted for some minutes. Two men indulged
in a regular hand-to-hand fight, and used their
dsts in true s orting style, while an eifort was
made to put Klr. Bernard O’Connor, who was
foremost among the invaders, into the chair, and
start an opposition meeting. The amnge both
to heads and property must have been consider-
able. ne man was carried out iiisensible, and
several had their heads cut, Mr. Forster himself
sulfering slight injuries. Then the police rushed
in, several arrests were made, and the platform
was cleared.
At the Ilammersmitli Police Court, next day,
